There is nothing that can duplicate the feel, sound and beauty of a hand crafted wooden game call, at least in my opinion. For a few years acrylics were popular but the trend now seems to be back to wood which is no surprise to me. In my workshop I prefer to work with wood so on this site that is what you'll find, nothing against acrylics, some of them are nice, but I prefer the richer tone wood gives and they look so much better, again that is only my opinion but I'm sure many will agree.
During the development of my line of calls I experimented with many different wood species, from exotic to local, it was interesting to discover that some calls work best with very hard exotics like Cocobolo while other calls shine when made from local woods like Black Walnut. For example the ducks calls I came up with work best in Cocobolo but the Goose call is best in Walnut, and Paddle or Scratch Box calls simply kick butt in Walnut and Cherry. You will find calls in different species here but only if they produce the sound I was looking for. The experimenting is constant, who knows what I'll stick on the lathe next.
Another thing you may find different here is the finishes I use. I prefer to stick with Oils and Wipe on finishes as they are thin, protect the wood and do not have excessive glare. My calls are made to hunt with not to sit on a shelf so a thick shinny finish would either produce glare in the field or chip off with age and abuse, an oil finish might wear off in time but will always enhance the natural beauty of wood.
